Bill Ryan is an energetic, engaging and dynamic speaker bringing a fresh perspective to nonprofit governance.
He suggests that although board members may have increased clarity around their roles and responsibilities, they continue to face a tremendous struggle.
The work of the volunteer board is progressively more technical and fiduciary, often leading to a board finding it difficult to sustain enthusiasm for their work.
During the course of their research, Bill Ryan and his colleagues Richard P. Chait and Barbara E. Taylor recognized that nonprofit governance has not kept pace with the increasing complexity of organizations as they exist today.
In response, they developed the "Governance as Leadership" model to bridge the gap between the governance design and the organizational needs of nonprofits.

Governance Learning Forum - Morning Plenary: $75.00
8:00 am – 10:45 am
Bill Ryan begins the dialogue with key concepts of the "Governance as Leadership" approach.
Participants will identify conventional board assumptions and learn how to enrich their governance repertoire using the three modes of governance:
- The traditional fiduciary mode where legal, security, and liability questions ought to be addressed
- The strategic mode where a wide range of issues from market positioning to organizational image are raised
- The generative mode which is a new and highly subjective area of intervention dealing primarily with the institution's identity, its preferences, and values

Starting with a fresh diagnosis of perennial board problems, Bill Ryan will introduce
key concepts of a new governance framework.
In place of the 'micro-governing' that increasingly confines boards to routine, sometimes
marginal work, he proposes reframing governance as a form of leadership.
This shift in thinking offers board members more meaningful and consequential work
and nonprofit organizations the benefits of an engaged, value-adding board.
Through diagnostic and interactive exercises, participants will identify what's holding
their board back and how board members and executive directors together can take
new approaches to their governing work. |
